Darren Pearcy
“Exploring performance, culture, and systems through skateboarding and sport.”
I've spent my life in and around skateboarding, from starting as a young skateboarder through to working across brand, marketing, sales, buying, athlete development, and Olympic high-performance sport. That journey has shaped how I think about people, leadership, culture, relationships and the environments that influence progression and performance. Today, my work brings those experiences together, with a particular interest in connecting people, ideas, and systems to create meaningful experiences and impact.

01. Skateboarding
Skateboarding was my entry point into everything.Like many skateboarders, I learned through repetition, autonomy, exploration, observation, and community. Those early experiences shaped how I still think today, particularly my understanding of how environments influence behaviour, creativity, progression, and confidence. Skateboarding taught me the value of learning through experience, figuring things out for myself, and being part of something bigger than the individual. That understanding continues to influence my work across leadership, coaching, marketing and performance.
02. Rollersnakes
My twelve years at Rollersnakes gave me experience across many areas of the skateboarding industry, from retail and e-commerce to sales, marketing, buying, athlete management, brand development and multimedia production. Starting on the shop floor and working directly with the local skateboarding community, I developed an understanding of the people, culture and relationships that sit at the heart of skateboarding. Over time, my role evolved into wider commercial, creative and management responsibilities, working across brands, athletes, events, campaigns and content. That experience gave me a broader understanding of the relationship between culture and business, and the importance of authenticity, communication and community in building meaningful relationships between people, brands and organisations.Key Areas of Experience- Retail, sales, and community engagement within UK skateboarding

03. Skateboard GB
Since joining Skateboard GB in 2019, I have played a central role in building and developing the organisation's Olympic performance programme through the Tokyo, Paris and LA Olympic cycles. When I arrived, very little formal performance infrastructure existed. Skateboarding was entering the Olympic Games for the first time, and much of the programme had to be developed while we were already delivering internationally, often with limited resources and little precedent to follow. Over three Olympic cycles, my work has spanned coaching, athlete support, national team and pathway development, performance strategy, marketing, funding, operational delivery, policy and governance, and wider stakeholder engagement.Great Britain qualified two skateboarders for Tokyo and three for Paris, with Sky Brown winning bronze medals at both Games.I've been fortunate to work closely with Sky and her family throughout that journey, contributing to her Olympic preparation and ongoing development.Beyond competition, I've helped build the structures that underpin the programme today, from athlete agreements, selection policies, and performance standards to health and wellbeing frameworks, coaching support, and long-term development planning. I've also contributed significantly to UK Sport investment and funding submissions, including performance strategy and What It Takes To Win modelling. Alongside this, I've developed expertise in performance data and analysis, using competition footage, judging trends, and athlete progression data to inform coaching, decision-making, and programme development.Today, as Head of Performance and Pathway, my focus is increasingly on programme leadership and building a more connected, sustainable national pathway, linking early-stage athlete development with Olympic-level performance towards Brisbane 2032 and beyond.Key Areas of Experience- Olympic campaign planning and delivery across Tokyo, Paris and towards LA 2028

04. Wider Leadership & Development
Alongside my work within skateboarding, I've become increasingly involved in the wider UK high-performance sport system. This includes membership of UK Sport's Performance Directors Forum Strategic Group, involvement in the Head Coaches Forum, and contributing to wider conversations around leadership, coaching, people development, and the future of performance sport. I've also been involved in coach development initiatives, including mentoring coaches within England Rugby and UK Sport's Supporting Coaches in High Performance Sport (SCiHPS) programme. These opportunities have allowed me to learn from people working across different sports, organisations, and environments, while contributing my own experiences and perspectives.I've represented Team GB and the British Olympic Association as Team Leader for British skateboarding at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games, supporting athletes and staff within the unique demands of Games-time environments. My Approach to LeadershipLeadership and people development have become increasingly important to how I think about my work. I believe in combining high empathy with high challenge, creating environments where people feel trusted, supported, and able to take responsibility for their own development and performance. For me, leadership is about understanding people, building relationships, providing clarity, and creating the conditions for individuals and teams to do their best work. Helping people grow, contribute, and thrive is some of the most important work a leader can do. I increasingly believe that the greatest contribution I can make isn't always through delivering more work myself, but through developing and supporting the people around me. That means investing time in people, creating opportunities for them to lead, encouraging autonomy, and balancing support with accountability. I continue to invest heavily in my own leadership development through curiosity, reflection, collaboration, and learning from people operating across sport, business, and other environments.Key Areas of Experience- Skateboarding Team Leader for the British Olympic Association at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games

05. Areas I Work Across
My experience has developed across several connected areas, each informing how I approach people, organisations, and performance.Leadership & People Development: Supporting individuals and teams through trust, empathy, challenge, collaboration, and a focus on creating the conditions for people to grow.Coaching & Performance Support: Working with athletes, coaches, and support teams through performance planning, competition preparation, reflection, and the practical demands of high-performance environments.Performance & Pathway Development: Designing and developing approaches that support athlete progression, from early development through to elite and Olympic-level performance.Culture, Brand & Communication: Drawing on experience across marketing, sales, media, and skateboarding culture to connect people, ideas, brands, and communities through authentic communication and storytelling.Data, Insight & Systems Thinking: Using performance analysis, trend tracking, and evidence to identify patterns, simplify complexity, and inform decisions across coaching, athlete development, and organisational planning.AI, Learning & Creative Exploration: Exploring practical ways AI and emerging technologies can support analysis, reflection, communication, learning, and more effective ways of working. I'm particularly interested in how these tools can make complex information more accessible and useful for athletes, coaches, leaders, and organisations.
06. What I Believe
My experiences across skateboarding, business, and Olympic sport have shaped a number of beliefs that continue to guide how I work.Environment matters: The conditions we create influence behaviour, confidence, creativity, and progression.Culture and performance are connected: Understanding people and the environments they come from is fundamental to supporting them.Leadership is about people: Relationships, trust, empathy, challenge, and accountability all have a role in helping others grow.Clarity creates opportunity: People are better equipped to develop when they understand expectations, standards, and direction.Development is rarely linear: Progression requires patience, adaptability, and an understanding of individual journeys.Different environments require different approaches: Emerging sports and organisations don't always fit traditional models.Curiosity matters: Reflection, data, new technologies, and learning from others can challenge assumptions and improve decisions.Sustainable success takes time: Consistency, collaboration, relationships, and a willingness to keep learning are essential.

I currently lead Performance and Pathway at Skateboard GB, with a focus on developing a more connected and sustainable approach to athlete progression, from early development through to Olympic-level performance. A significant part of that work involves aligning coaching, performance standards, competition opportunities, and athlete support to create greater clarity across the pathway towards Brisbane 2032 and beyond.Alongside this, I continue to explore wider interests in leadership, coach development, organisational culture, performance systems, and the practical use of AI and data. I'm particularly interested in how different disciplines and experiences can inform one another, and how we can build better environments for people to learn, contribute, and perform.I'm always interested in connecting with people working across skateboarding, sport, leadership, coaching, culture, and creative industries.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darren-pearcy-2915121a3/
